The Slovenian Water Agency (DRSV) is a body affiliated to the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning. The regionally organised state agency is comprised of the main unit in Ljubljana and the area sectors for the catchments of the rivers Mura, Drava, Savinja, the upper, middle and lower Sava, and the catchments of the Soča River and the Adriatic rivers with the sea.

The DRSV operates in specialised areas of water management, and combines the contents of water protection, water engineering and water use. The agency implements administrative, expert and development tasks according to the regulations governing water. It carries out the tasks of a water planning authority and is a consent authority while conducting other tasks within the procedures involving spatial planning, construction, environmental impact assessments and other expert assessments. It also drafts expert and development bases for the River Basin Management Plan, the Flood Risk Management Plan and the Marine Strategy. The DRSV prepares expert groundwork and measures for protection from hydromorphological pressures and water pollution, reducing flood risks, and implements tasks regarding water use. It also participates in the expert review regarding examining compliance of project documentation prepared for siting of construction and in procedures for adopting spatial acts.

The DRSV prepares expert opinions on matters discussed by bilateral water management commissions with the neighbouring countries. In addition, it participates in working groups under the Common Implementation Strategy for water related directives at the European Commission in Brussels, at the Secretariat of the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River – ICPDR in Vienna and at the Secretariat of the International Sava River Basin Commission – ISRBC in Zagreb. At the global level, the agency also engages in the activities of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development – OECD in Paris.

The DRSV actively cooperates with similar national and foreign institutions and participates in international project teams and consortiums co-financed by the European INTERREG funding programmes, e.g. the Cross-Border Cooperation, the Alpine Space, the Danube Region, the ADRION programme, the Central Europe and others. It is also involved in all respective priority axes of the Operational Programme for the Implementation of the European Cohesion Policy for the relevant period.
